Community Radio - A project of the Civic Media Center
- Our Mission
- Take back the public airwaves by providing a fresh, engaging, and empowering approach to news, entertainment, cultural and educational programming;
- Challenge listeners with factual national, state, and local news from a fresh perspective, and to provide objective information on issues critical to you;
- Become a public forum for citizen debate and greater democratic participation;
- Listen to our audience as we decide new avenues to take as an organization;
- Celebrate our community by highlighting new voices in the arts, especially local musicians, artists, authors, and performers;
- Dare to be courageous, outrageous, boldly eclectic, unabashedly quirky, and unremittingly innovative;
- Be the loud, clear, honest, grassroots radio voice of Gainesville;
- Background In 2001, the CMC applied for a low-power FM permit, and after years of waiting, we finally have it. At last, Gainesville will have its own community radio station.
- Taking it back The Telecommunications Act of 1996 deregulated radio and paved the way for the media empires like Clear Channel. It is phenomenally difficult for regular citizens to get their slice of radio access.
- Getting involved How can you help free the airwaves?
- Donate to WGOT-LP!
- Make a proposal for a program!
- Become a volunteer (DJ's, production assistants, tech geeks needed)!
- Listen in and spread the word! 94.7 FM
- Come to the next GCR meeting!
- What is the Civic Media Center? The Civic Media Center was founded in 1993 to provide community access to information and points of view not carried (incompletely carried or inaccurately carried) in corporate, mainstream media.
- Can I give WGOT $ to the CMC? Well, no. WGOT Gainesville Community Radio is a project of the Civic Media Center, but it raises its own funds.
"[People] in earnest have no time to waste in patching fig-leaves for the naked truth."

Due to the FCC hoops we were required to jump through, the CMC will be sharing the frequency with Faith Presbyterian Church and Calvary Baptist Church. Don't be surprised if you sometimes hear programming that sounds... well, rather unlike the CMC. But it's worth it because we will amplify the voices that are all too often drowned out by the din of corporate radio.
Gainesville Community Radio is part of the larger fight for independent, locally-produced, community-owned media. Just call us the RobinHoods of Radio -- we're taking the media back! Join us.
The CMC is an alternative library and infoshop dedicated to presenting materials that challenge the status quo. www.civicmediacenter.org
We really appreciate your support of both the Civic Media Center and Gainesville Community Radio. Here's three cheers for free speech in all its forms!
