What is Buddhism and is there any benefit to meditation?

What exactly is Buddhism?

Well, Buddhism is a religion or a spiritual development that leads you into the true reality of life.

Buddhists follow practices such as meditation in order to develop wisdom, self-awareness and kindness. Buddhism offers a resource for those who would like to follow a path that will lead you into the end path of enlightenment. People who have been enlightened have the ability to see the nature of reality more clearly than those who haven’t.

Buddhism doesn’t include worshipping a god so it can be hard for people to view Buddhism as a religion. The thing with Buddhism is there is nothing set in concrete, nothing is permanent. Buddhists believe change is possible and the religion is open to all races, sexuality’s, genders and nationalities. Practical methods are taught in order to help people realize they can transform their experiences and become responsible for their own lives.

Compassion is always found alongside Buddhism and so is meditation. By practicing Buddhism, we can access more room in our minds and learn to distance ourselves from negative feelings and thoughts. We all have negative emotions like anger, jealousy and sadness. When we focus on these emotions, we lose grip from the reality of filling our minds with positive emotions like attachment, pride, love, compassion and wisdom. The fact our emotions are changing often in the Buddhism religion they are viewed upon as empty.

These emotions are no basis for your true ego which means you can have plenty more room to fill with joy and happiness. The overall goal in Buddhism is obtaining your positive qualities such as compassion, joy and fearlessness which soon become perfect.

By taking any confusions and outside disturbances out of our minds we can benefit hugely in so many ways.

The best thing about meditation is the fact you don’t need expensive tools or equipment to do it and it can be done practically anywhere you like.

How to meditate

Meditation should be practiced in an area that is calm and peaceful. You need to find yourself a tranquil location where you can solely focus on meditation without any distractions. You want to be left alone for the time you are meditating. Your space doesn’t need to be big, even a small space like an outdoor chair or a corner in your bedroom. You just need privacy and quietness.

Be sure to wear comfortable clothes. When meditating the aim is to be as calm and relaxed as you can be. This can be difficult to achieve if you are wearing clothing that is restrictive and uncomfortable it will be difficult to achieve your goals.

Ensure you are sitting in a comfortable position. There will be different positions that are more comfortable for each individual person so be sure to find what suits you best.
The most common positions for meditation is the lotus or half-lotus position but isn’t suitable for those who don’t have flexibility in their legs and hips.
You can do meditation with your eyes open or shut but as a beginner is it easier to meditate with them shut until you are able to avoid visual distractions with your eyes open.
Meditation breathing is easy to learn and is a great way to start off your journey of meditation and Buddhism. Find a spot on your stomach and focus on that area with your mind. Focus on our stomach and how it moves when you breathe in and out.

Try and focus on breathing normally don’t change your breathing techniques. If you haven’t meditated before it can help to focus on a visual object until you get more advanced.

It’s a good idea to meditate at the same time each day to help you get into a scheduled routine which will help you get used to doing it daily which can offer more benefits.

Just take small steps first up and meditate for five minutes a day and gradually increase as your concentration levels grow.

Feel the difference for yourself it’s time to discover the calm and positive inner you to bring a more positive outlook to your life.
